If you are looking for hotels in Jiufen, it means you’ve already decided to visit, but you’re not sure if staying overnight in Jiufen is actually worth it. In any case, I am excited for you because Jiufen is a beautiful village overlooking valleys, mountains, and the Pacific Ocean.
We spent several weeks in Taipei and decided to do a long weekend trip to Jiufen – Shifen – Jiaoxi hot springs but unfortunately we looked for accommodation at the last minute and all good hotels in Jiufen were sold out.
Instead, we stayed in Ruifang for 2 nights to have equal distance from both Jiufen and Shifen. While logistically it worked out really well, we regretted not staying 1 night in Jiufen.
In this guide, I will give you all the information you need to decide for yourself and share the best Jiufen hotels we researched for our next visit!
Is It Worth Staying Overnight in Jiufen? My Honest Review
Short Answer? It depends on your travelling style and preferences. Let’s get into it.
It is worth staying overnight in Jiufen if you are into hotels overlooking mountains, valleys and surrounded by red lanterns and paved roads. This is the magic of Jiufen old street and the main reason why everyone wants to visit it (although it is also popular for its numerous hiking trails and for being a gold mining town – hence the Gold Museum).
Just get your expectations in order because it is a very touristy place and crowded especially after 3:00 PM when all tourist buses come for a couple of hours. After 8:00 PM it gets a lot more quiet but many tea houses and eateries also close by 9:00 PM.
There are a couple of bars if you fancy having a drink but this is pretty much it. Don’t expect night life or anything like that.
If you’re the type of person that doesn’t get excited about staying overnight in such places then you can skip it and just visit for a few hours in the day, snap some pics, try the local foods and snacks, try local tea and leave.
Best Places to Stay in Jiufen Taiwan
If you are planning on staying overnight in Jiufen, keep this golden rule in mind: the higher the hotel, the better the view and the more uphill you’ll need to cover to and from the bus stop or Jiufen old street – keep this in mind!
Some hotels offer parking space but you’ll need to confirm with them directly to avoid any surprises as the roads over there are a bit steep and public parking space is limited.
🛏️ Sunshine B&B
If you want something super convenient with a gorgeous view, Sunshine B&B is a fantastic pick. It sits right near the start of the old alley, just a short walk from the bus stop, FamilyMart, and 7/11, and because it is road-accessible, you won’t have to struggle with heavy suitcases or a stroller.
It has incredibly warm hosts, and the delicious fresh breakfast, and the balcony views are a huge plus. If you are carrying suitcases or want to be close to the old street, this is a great and affordable pick.
🛏️ Dosun B&B
Dosun B&B sits a few minutes uphill from the main town, offering a peaceful location with a stunning terrace and incredible panoramic views. It does involve a steep walk up a fair number of steps, so it is recommended to leave your large luggage behind in Taipei if you can and pack light in a backpack.
If you stay here, definitely treat yourself to a dedicated sea view room so you can wake up to breathtaking sunrises and sunsets over the bay. Not all rooms have sea and mountain view.
Chiu Chunt Dint B&B puts you just a short walk from the 965 bus stop from Taipei and steps away from the Old Street and local shops. The staff here are exceptionally courteous, and you can expect cozy rooms (some with lovely sea views) and generous breakfast.
Just keep in mind that like many traditional guesthouses in the area, it has multiple floors with no elevator and lots of stairs, and they operate on a cash-only basis, which is pretty common across Taiwan. The rooms with the best views seem to be the ones at the top floors so if you have mobility issues make sure to double check this with them prior to your arrival.
If you are traveling with a furry friend or want a well-maintained, organized hotel, Pet Friendly Nostalgic Inn is a wonderful choice. It is located just steps from the old street, meaning you get easy access to nearby convenience stores while still enjoying peaceful mountain and ocean views once the evening day-trippers clear out.
The guesthouse goes the extra mile with thoughtful touches like free ponchos, mosquito repellent, and a lobby water station with hot and cold water, though you should be prepared for another tall building with no elevator and plenty of steps. This is common across the majority of hotels in Jiufen.
🛏️ Windsor’s Sunlight Han-Guan
Windsor’s Sunlight Han-Guan offers an exceptionally hospitable stay with hosts who truly go above and beyond! It is located close to the famous A-Mei tea house and the main street, and it has stunning rooms with massive windows framing gorgeous valley views. When we visited it was very rainy and cloudy and we missed the amazing views, but hopefully you’re luckier than us!
You’ll wake up to an incredible homemade breakfast delivered right to your door, and the staff are full of fantastic local recommendations on where to eat and what to see.
Staying in Ruifang
If you decide against staying overnight in Jiufen but prefer to staying in Ruifang like us, to be in equal distance from Jiufen and Shifen and get to see a less polished and more authentic town, then staying in Ruifang is your best choice.
We were on a tight budget so we stayed in a private room at Yi Hostel, and we didn’t have any issues during our stay. There was a shared kitchen downstairs to cook, drink coffee or store your things in the fridge. There were plenty of shared bathrooms too.
Personally I didn’t like the fact that there was no window in the room, or actually there was a tiny one but it is looking out at a wall. Maybe other rooms are different, but in all honesty, having small windows, little sunlight and fresh air is something we saw often in Taiwan. This is more common for the budget rooms/apartments.
There were other hotels and accommodations in the area and close to Ruifang train station too.
Final Verdict: Is Staying Overnight in Jiufen Worth It?
So, is staying overnight in Jiufen actually worth it? Absolutely. A day trip gives you a glimpse of the market, tea houses and beautiful landscapes, but the real magic happens after dark. The true reward is watching the red lanterns glow in the evening, and then having the historic alleys to yourself the next morning while everything is open and peaceful.
If you decide to stay for a bit longer, you can also explore the hiking trails in the surrounding area. Just be sure to lock in your accommodation early to avoid any last-minute booking scrambles, and get ready for an unforgettable mountain getaway!
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Jiufen is not a late-night party destination. Most retail shops close around 7:00 PM, while restaurants and tea houses generally wrap up by 8:00 or 9:00 PM at the latest. After that, the village gets very quiet and tranquil.
Most traditional guesthouses (minsus) are historic, multi-story hillside buildings with narrow staircases and no elevators. It is best to pack light or store your large suitcases at a locker storage facility.
Some hotels, however, might be willing to come pick you up from the bus stop and help with your luggage. You’ll need to confirm with them before booking.
Beyond wandering the lantern-lit alleys of Jiufen Old Street, trying the local tea at traditional teahouses, explore the gold-mining history by visiting the Gold Mining museum or try a scenic mountain trail in the area if the weather allows.
